Twitter Reacts To Madonna’s VMA Awards Tribute

MTV’s Video Music Awards are over, the champagne has been mopped up and celebrities are no doubt sleeping in after a night filled with after parties and celebrations. Now that one of music’s biggest nights is in the rearview mirror until next summer, viewers finally have the time to unpack the VMA’s biggest moments – namely Madonna’s tribute to late legend Aretha Franklin.

Her heart was in the right place; after all, it’s never easy to be tasked with something as big as paying tribute to a woman whose voice is surpassed only by the amazing places she allowed it to take her. But this morning, viewers were divided and in some cases, felt that not only did Madonna’s tribute fall short of expectations, it crossed into flat out disrespect when it came time to pay tribute to the Queen of Soul.

That being said? Some of the stuff these kids are saying on Twitter this morning is hilarious – we’re cracking up over here, and we thought we’d share the wealth. Here are some of the most savage Twitter reactions to Madonna’s VMA tribute to Aretha Franklin:

Never one to be kept down, Madge took to social media this morning to defend her VMA moment, posting this picture with the following caption:

“And just to clarify: I was asked to present video of the year by MTV! And then they asked me to share any anecdotes I had in my career connected to Aretha Franklin! I shared a part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way. I did not intend to do a tribute to her! That would be impossible in 2 minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show. I could never do her justice in this context or environment. Unfortunately most people have short attention spans, and are so quick to judge. I love Aretha! R.E.S.P.E.C.T. ??.”

What do you think – was Madonna’s tribute in the right spirit, or was it as ‘disrespectful’ and ‘self-indulgent’ as fans are calling it? You decide!
